What's New in NetMiner 3.3

Version : 3.3.0.080422

Released : April.22, 2008
Hot Features in NetMiner 3.3 Update

I. New Modules

1. Analyze >> Neighbor >> Assortativity (Package: Network Measure-Advanced)

New network measure ‘Assortativity’ is added. Assortative mixing measures how much the nodes that have high (low) attribute value (in default, degree) tend to be connected to other nodes with high (low) attribute value.

2. Statistics >> Power Law (Package: Statistics-Multivariate Analysis)

NetMiner provides the most probable estimation of power-law model. Traditionally, regression analysis is used to Power-law model fitting. But the risk of such approach is revealed in ‘Power Law Models in Empirical Data’. NetMiner uses stricter maximum-likelihood approaches and goodness of fit test.

3. Visualize >> Two Mode >> Spring (Package:

NetMiner 3 includes 6 two dimensional spring-embedding layouts. Now these layouts are extended to 2-mode Network in the menu of ‘Visualize >> Two Mode >> Spring’.

4. Chart >> Pie Chart (Package: Chart-2D)

New charting module Pie Chart is added to NetMiner 3. Pie Chart is a circular chart which shows distribution of vector values. The size of each divided piece is proportional to the frequency of the corresponding vector value.

5. Chart >> Box Plot (Package: Chart-2D)

New charting module Box Plot is added. It charts distributions of dependent variable conditioned on independent variable. Major distribution displayed in this chart are mean, median, first quartile(25% line), third quartile(75% line), min outlier and max outlier.

6. Transform >> Query (Package: Data Transform)

‘Transform >> Query’ substitutes for both ‘Node Extract’ and ‘Link Extract’ module. Query module extracts subset from the NodeSet or Network of Current Workfile by the attribute values. The result of Query module is saved to Current Workfile as a QuerySet.

II. Enhanced Modules

1. User Options

- Proximity measures are grouped into three categories-Match, Correlation, Distance.
- Main process option of ‘Transform >> Layer >> Merge’ is enhanced. When the ‘And’ or ‘Or’ option is selected, data is dichotomized by force. If one of other options is selected, dichotomization is not performed.
- New Main process option is added to ‘Transform >> Mode >> 1-mode Network’. User’s able to decide which dimension should be compared in the module. ‘Row Vectors’ or ‘Column Vectors’ can be selected.
- Proximity option of ‘Transform >> Mode >> Main Node Attribute’ is simplified. There are three options-Absolute Difference, Squared Difference, Exact Match.
- ‘Type of Attribute Value’ option is added to Main process of ‘Analyze >> Neighbor >> Homophily’ module. The output table is decided by selected option.

2. Measures/Outputs

- Main Reports of processing modules are formalized. ‘Header’ shows session description, processing options and data description. ‘Body’ contains output summary. And ‘Footer’ shows the software information.
- When a transform module is successfully performed, a dialog window pops out. User’s able to add the result of transform module directly with the dialog.
- When a user adds some 1-mode Network table to a dataset, NetMiner checks if the data is symmetric. If it is, a dialog window pops out. User’s able to set the data as an undirected data with the dialog.
- Bundle Code Table is created as an output of ‘Transform >> Layer >> Multiplex’ module.
- In ‘Analyze >> Neighbor >> Degree’ module, ‘Isolate’ and ‘Pendent’ was calculated separately for in-degree and out-degree. Now they are calculated considering both in-degree and out-degree.
- The proportion of each component’s nodes to all nodes is presented in Main Report of ‘Analyze >> Cohesion >> Component’.
- ‘# of Components’ is added as a measure of ‘Analyze >> Properties >> Network’ module.

3. Map/Chart

- Spring Map is created as an output of ‘Analyze >> Centrality’ modules.
- Default Style is applied to Spring Map of Centrality modules. The size of node represents the centrality score of that node.
- Default Style is applied to Spring Map of ‘Analyze >> Neighbor >> Degree’ module. The vertical length of a node represents out-degree of that node, and the horizontal length represents in-degree.
- Default Style is applied to Spring Map of ‘Analyze >> Neighbor >> Ego Networks’ module. The size of a node represents the EgoNet size of that node.
- Default Style is applied to Spring Map of ‘Analyze >> Neighbor >> Structural Hole’ module. The size of a node represents the Structural Hole score of that node.
- Spring Map is created as Default Map of Clique, n-Clique, n-Clan and k-Plex. Clustered Map is not created in these modules.
- Spring Map is created as an output of ‘Analyze >> Cohesion >> Cohesive Block’ module.
- Clustered Map is created as an output of ‘Analyze >> Position >> Brokerage’ module.
- Default Style is applied to Clustered Map of ‘Analyze >> Position >> Brokerage’ module. The size of a node represents the Brokerage score of that node.

4. Inspect Panel

- Structural Hole Measures Inspect item is added to Spring Map of Structural Hole module. Selected measure is represented as size of nodes. Efficiency, Effective Size, Aggregated Constraint and Hierarchy can be selected.
- ‘k-Shortest Path’ Inspect item is added to Spring Map of Shortest Path module. This item shows the paths whose number equals to k. The paths that have shorter geodesic distance are presented.
- Cutpoint/Bridge Inspect item is added to Spring Map of ‘Node Connectivity’ module.
- Brokerage Measures Inspect item is added to Clustered Map of Brokerage module. Selected measure is represented as size of nodes.

5. Others

- Node Extract and Link Extract module of Transform menu are removed. ‘Query’ module substitutes for them now.
- ‘Query’ is not performed in ‘Filter’ control item any more. ‘Filter’ control item only loads the QuerySet and Selection result. The querying is performed in ‘Transform >> Query’ module and selection is performed in Network Map.

III. New Features

1. NMF file

Project file format is changed to NMF(NetMiner 3 File). Unlike NPJ(NetMiner 3 Project file), it saves every data into just one file. Of course NPJ files are still opened in NetMiner 3. But data can be saved as NMF file only.

2. Recent Project

Recently opened project files are showed in ‘File’ menu.

3. File >> Close

You can easily close your project using ‘File >> Close’ option.

Data can be exported as a StOCNET file.

6. Auto Save and Auto Recovery

Now NetMiner 3 saves your data automatically. If the software is shut down unexpectedly, it shows auto-saved data at next software execution.

7. Error.log file

There’s errorlog file in the folder that NetMiner 3 is installed. If the software is shut down unexpectedly, the error is recorded in the file. Receiving the file from our users, we can support users more faster and better.

8. Offline-registering tool

Users unable to connect internet can register NetMiner 3 using phone call and e-mail.
